925 Sterling Silver Care Guide: Tips and Advice
925 silver is a living metal: it will develop a patina and tarnish, but its shine can be fully restored with the right care. Here is a complete guide to maintaining your 925 silver jewelry and keeping it looking like new.
To understand why 925 silver is the benchmark metal in jewelry, read our article Why Choose 925 Silver Jewelry. And to find out if you can wear your jewelry in the shower, consult our guide 925 Silver and Water.
Why Does 925 Silver Tarnish?
Tarnish is a surface reaction of silver, notably with sulfur compounds. Humidity and certain products can accelerate it. Tarnishing alone does not establish a piece's authenticity or quality.
Factors That Accelerate Tarnishing
- Humidity and perspiration
- Perfumes, creams, cosmetic products
- Chlorine (pool, household products)
- Sea air (salt)
- Contact with rubber
- Open-air storage
Daily Cleaning
After Each Wear
- Wipe with a soft microfiber cloth or a jewelry cloth
- Remove perspiration and cream residues
- Store in a case or a closed pouch
Gentle cleaning: check the piece first
For silver jewelry without stones, gilding or decorative patina, use lukewarm water and mild soap when needed, then rinse and dry carefully. Set or coated pieces require specific precautions; do not soak them by default.
Treating tarnish according to the finish
- Uncoated polished silver: a suitable silver polishing cloth may be used on the metal, following its instructions.
- Patinated silver: dark recesses may be intentional. Polishing or stripping baths can remove this decorative effect.
- Rhodium-plated or gilded silver: prefer a soft untreated cloth. Avoid abrasives and cleaners not intended for the finish.
Baking soda, foil and baths: why be careful?
We do not recommend these recipes as a general method: they may alter finishes or be unsuitable for stones and their settings. If a soft cloth is not enough, seek advice before choosing a product or treatment.
Special cases: jewelry with stones
Hardness alone does not determine how a stone should be cleaned. Porosity, possible treatments and its setting also matter. For turquoise, pearls, mother-of-pearl and stones with unknown treatments, avoid baths and keep polishing compounds off the stone. Start with gentle wiping with a soft cloth and check the care advice for the piece.
Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner at home without confirmation that the entire piece, including its setting, is compatible.
Marcasite Jewelry
Marcasite requires special attention. Consult our complete marcasite and 925 silver care guide.
Storage: The Key to Longevity
- Closed case: Limits exposure to air and humidity
- Anti-tarnish bags: Absorb sulfides from the air
- Separate pieces: Avoid scratches between jewelry items
- Away from the bathroom: Humidity = enemy #1
- Away from perfumes: Vapors accelerate tarnishing
How Often Should You Clean Your Jewelry?
Gently wipe the piece after wearing when needed. More thorough cleaning should depend on its condition, finish and stones, rather than an automatic weekly schedule.
What to Avoid
- ❌ Pool and jacuzzi (chlorine)
- ❌ Sea (salt)
- ❌ Daily showering (see our guide 925 Silver and Water)
- ❌ Sports (intense perspiration)
- ❌ Household cleaning products (chlorine, ammonia)
- ❌ Perfume directly on the jewelry
- ❌ Ultrasonic cleaning without checking that the piece is compatible
925 Silver vs. Plated Silver: The Maintenance Is Completely Different
Solid 925 silver can be cleaned and restored to its shine indefinitely. Plated silver loses its coating over time and cannot be restored in the same way. To understand all the differences, read our comparison 925 Silver, Gold Plated, and Steel — What Are the Differences?
