Sterling Silver, Gold Plated, or Stainless Steel: Which to Choose?
Silver-colored jewelry is not necessarily made of 925 silver. To make an informed purchase, distinguish the metal inside the piece from its surface finish.
At Vindicta, the jewelry selection discussed here is made of solid 925 silver. Steel and plated base metals are explained only to help you recognize differences in materials.
Solid silver and 925 silver: what is the difference?
“Solid” means silver forms the body of the jewelry, rather than a surface layer alone. “925” specifies its fineness: 92.5% pure silver, alloyed with other metals to make a material suitable for jewelry. Both terms can therefore describe the same piece: a solid 925 silver ring.

Comparison: material, finish and care
| Feature | Solid 925 silver | Plated base metal | Stainless steel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composition | Alloy containing 92.5% silver | Base metal coated with gold or silver | Iron-based alloy containing chromium; composition varies by grade |
| Precious metal | Silver throughout the material | Mainly in the coating | A silver color does not imply silver content |
| Wear | Can scratch and tarnish; care depends on the finish | Coating wear varies with thickness, friction and care | Resistance depends on the alloy and conditions of use |
| Sensitive skin | Check the full composition if you have a known sensitivity | Check both the base metal and coating | “Stainless” alone does not guarantee suitability |
| Restoration | Cleaning or professional work depends on the piece and stones | May require replating, which is not always possible | Possible work depends on construction |
Why we choose 925 silver
925 silver lends itself to relief work, engraving and stone settings that give each design its character. A carved signet ring, a simple band and a gemstone setting offer different styles in the same precious material.
It can also be cared for over time. Durability does not mean invulnerability: a ring can scratch, bend or need repairs. The thickness of the setting, construction and everyday handling matter alongside fineness.
Does gilding or rhodium plating change the underlying metal?
925 silver may receive a gold or rhodium finish. Its base remains 925 silver, unlike a base-metal piece covered with silver. Product descriptions should identify material and finish separately.
“Vermeil” is a regulated designation; a gold finish over silver does not automatically qualify. Check the specifications of the particular piece.
What should you check before buying?
- Look for an explicit 925 silver description, beyond the silver color.
- Check dimensions, weight where listed, and available sizes.
- Distinguish the setting material, surface finish and stone identity.
- Read the seller's authenticity information and return conditions.

Caring for silver without damaging the piece
Choose care suited to the whole piece: metal, finish, stone and setting. A method for a plain band may not suit a gilded ring or delicate gemstone. Our 925 silver care guide explains appropriate precautions.
