What is a Hallmark?
A hallmark is an official mark engraved or stamped on a piece of precious metal jewelry. It certifies the metal's composition and guarantees that the jewelry complies with current legal standards. In France, hallmarking is mandatory for all precious metal jewelry sold in the country.
The 925 Hallmark — The International Standard
The "925" hallmark means that the jewelry contains 92.5% pure silver. This is the international standard for sterling silver, gradually adopted since the 19th century. For the history of this standardization: 19th Century — Standardization of 925 Silver.
The remaining 7.5% is usually copper, which provides the necessary hardness for jewelry. Pure silver at 999 would be too soft to be crafted into jewelry.
The Different Grades of Silver
| Hallmark | Silver content | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 999 | 99.9% | Ingots, investment |
| 925 | 92.5% | Jewelry — international standard |
| 900 | 90% | Coins, some antique jewelry |
| 800 | 80% | Cutlery, tableware |
French Hallmarks
The Purity Mark
In France, the purity mark for 925 silver is a Minerva head (profile of the Roman goddess). It is stamped by guarantee offices or approved silversmiths. This hallmark has existed since 1838 and guarantees the metal's composition.
The Maker's Mark
The maker's mark identifies the manufacturer. It consists of the silversmith's initials framed by a distinctive symbol. It is mandatory in France for all jewelry manufactured in the country.
The Import Mark
For imported jewelry (such as those made in Turkey, India, or Thailand), a specific import mark is applied by French guarantee offices after verifying the composition.
International Hallmarks
- United Kingdom: Lion passant (925 sterling silver) — the oldest hallmarking system in the world (since 1300)
- Italy: 5-pointed star + figure 925
- Germany: Star + crescent moon (Halbmond und Krone)
- Turkey: 925 hallmark + manufacturer's mark
- India: BIS 925 (Bureau of Indian Standards)
- International: Vienna Convention — common hallmark recognized in 20+ countries
How to Read a Hallmark
- Find the hallmark: Usually inside a ring, on the clasp of a necklace or bracelet, on the post of an earring
- Use a magnifying glass: Hallmarks are small — a 10x magnifying glass is recommended
- Identify the number: 925 = sterling silver. 750 = 18 carat gold. 585 = 14 carat gold
- Check the symbol: Minerva head in France, lion in England, etc.
Hallmark vs. Engraved "925" Marking
Caution: a simple "925" marking engraved on a piece of jewelry is not an official hallmark. Anyone can engrave "925" on a brass jewel. The true hallmark is stamped (indented or in relief) by a competent authority, not simply laser-engraved.

The History of Hallmarking
Silver hallmarking dates back to the Middle Ages. In England, Goldsmiths' Hall in London has controlled the quality of silver since 1300 — hence the term "hallmark". In France, silversmiths' guilds enforced hallmarking from the 14th century.
