Men's Chain Link Types: Curb, Figaro, Cable, and More
The link style gives a men's chain its identity. Two models of the same length and width can produce very different results depending on the shape, articulation, and finish of their links. Here are the main families and the criteria for comparing them properly.
Curb link: classic and bold
Its links are flattened and then oriented in the same plane. It rests well on the neck and reflects light extensively. Thin, it remains understated; wide, it becomes a statement piece worn alone.
Figaro link: a recognizable rhythm
The Figaro alternates several small links with one longer link. This structure adds movement without losing the character of a flattened link. It is well suited for wearing alone and for Mediterranean or urban styles.
Caboise link: regular and versatile
Composed of simple and regular links, the caboise is easy to pair. Depending on its thickness, it can hold a pendant or be worn alone. Its understated nature leaves more room for the suspended motif.
Venetian link: geometric and clean
Its square links interlock to form a dense line. This construction offers a contemporary aesthetic and good visibility with a pendant, provided that the width and weight are adapted.
Snake, rope, and palmier links
The snake link forms a smooth and flexible surface. The rope link gives a twisted effect that catches the light strongly. The palmier or Byzantine links are more complex and decorative: they are generally intended to be worn alone.
Which link for a pendant?
Choose a regular link that is flexible enough and proportionate to the weight of the pendant. The caboise and Venetian are often good starting points. Above all, check the strength of the clasp and the passage of the bail. Our guide details choosing a men's chain for a pendant.
Adapting the link to the width
A compact link appears more massive than an open link of the same dimension. Before comparing only the millimeters, also observe the weight and density. To refine your choice, consult our guide to men's chain widths.
Choosing properly in three steps
- Decide whether the chain will be worn alone or with a pendant.
- Choose the desired character: understated, classic, graphic, or bold.
