Why watches made of solid 925 silver are rare

Enter any jewelry store or browse major online retailers: you'll find thousands of watches. In stainless steel, gilded brass, silver-plated, titanium. But a watch in solid, hallmarked 925 silver—a true one, with precious metal from the outside to the core—that's another story. Here's why.

Solid 925 silver is expensive to work with

Sterling silver (92.5% pure silver) is a precious metal traded on the stock market. Its price fluctuates, but remains structurally higher than the stainless steel or brass used in the vast majority of watches on the market. For a watch bracelet weighing 30 to 40 grams, the raw material alone represents a significant cost—even before manufacturing, stone setting, or quality control.

The result: most manufacturers prefer steel or silver plating, which offer a similar appearance at a fraction of the cost. The uninformed consumer doesn't see the difference—until the plating flakes off.

Silver plating is not silver

This is the point many people overlook. A "silver" or "silver-colored" watch is not necessarily made of silver. Silver plating is a base metal (brass, zinc, steel) covered with a thin layer of silver by electrolysis. This layer is a few microns thick. It wears, scratches, discolors—and cannot be easily restored.

Solid 925 silver, on the other hand, bears its hallmark engraved in the material. It does not flake. It may blacken slightly over time (natural oxidation), but a simple cleaning with a soft cloth immediately restores its shine. It is a living metal that ages well.

Setting stones on solid silver requires specific expertise

Our marcasite and sultanite watch bracelets are not simply cast in silver: the stones are hand-set into the metal. Marcasite, with its small metallic flecks, requires a setting precision that few workshops still master. Sultanite, a rare and color-changing stone, is selected stone by stone for its chromatic quality.

This level of execution is incompatible with mass production. This is precisely what makes these pieces exclusive—and impossible to find in large stores.

Why Major Watch Brands Avoid Solid Silver

Another, more technical factor explains the rarity of 925 silver watches: this metal, being softer than the stainless steel typically used in watchmaking, requires a thicker case design to offer the same resistance to everyday shocks. Major watch manufacturers, geared towards mass production and standardization, prefer steel for its consistent hardness and low cost on an industrial scale. Solid silver thus remains the domain of small houses or specialized silversmiths, capable of adapting the thickness and structure of each piece individually rather than following a single mold.

The 925 silver watch: an object between two worlds

A solid 925 silver watch doesn't truly belong to the world of classic watchmaking—where steel and titanium reign. Nor does it entirely belong to the world of jewelry—where integrating a Quartz movement isn't usually considered. It stands at the border of both: a watch-jewelry piece, both functional and precious.

This intermediate position explains why so few brands venture into it. Watchmakers don't work with solid silver. Jewelers don't integrate movements. Vindicta, by selecting these pieces for over 10 years, occupies this rare territory with a collection of 7 exclusive models.
