2026 Complete Guide: Natural Stones in Jewelry - Virtues, Meanings, and Expert Advice
Onyx, turquoise, tiger's eye, carnelian, labradorite... Natural stones are at the heart of Vindicta jewelry. Here is the complete 2026 guide to understanding their virtues, meanings, and how to choose them.
This page is written and updated by the Vindicta team, an independent jeweler based in Rennes since 2016, initially with a physical store and then online. Every stone presented here is carefully selected, checked, and set in our own creations — this guide is based on a decade of sourcing and actual sales, not a generic compilation. Details of our control criteria can be found on our authenticity page and our history.
All our stones are set in certified sterling silver 925. To understand why this metal is the best support for natural stones: Why Choose Sterling Silver 925 Jewelry?
How to Choose Your Natural Stone?
- By desired virtues: Protection, love, energy, intuition...
- By birth month: See our 2026 birthstones guide
- By aesthetics: Color, texture, luster
- By intuition: The stone that attracts you is often the one you need
Natural, Treated, or Synthetic: Understanding the Differences
Not all natural stones are equal in terms of treatment. A raw natural stone has undergone no intervention. A treated natural stone has been heated, dyed, or stabilized to intensify its color — an ancient and perfectly accepted practice in jewelry, as with onyx or carnelian. A synthetic stone, however, is manufactured in a laboratory with the same chemical composition as the natural stone but without the value of geological origin. At Vindicta, we work exclusively with natural stones, either raw or treated according to traditional practices, never synthetic stones presented as natural.
How Gemologists Classify Stones: The Mohs Hardness Scale
The international gemological community (notably the Gemological Institute of America, a global reference in stone classification and authentication) uses the Mohs scale to evaluate a stone's resistance to scratching, on a scale of 1 (talc, very soft) to 10 (diamond, the hardest known). This figure is a real practical criterion for choosing jewelry intended for daily wear:
- Onyx / Agate / Carnelian: 6.5 to 7 — excellent resistance, suitable for daily wear
- Amethyst / Rose Quartz / Citrine: 7 — very resistant, even scratches glass
- Turquoise: 5 to 6 — softer, to be protected from impacts and chemicals
- Mother of Pearl: 2.5 to 4.5 — the most fragile of our stones, requires special attention
- Marcasite (cut pyrite): 6 — solid, but sensitive to prolonged humidity
The harder a stone is, the less it fears daily micro-scratches (keys, friction) — a criterion to keep in mind when choosing between a ring worn daily and a more occasional piece of jewelry.

Can You Wear Multiple Stones Together?
Yes, and it's even a very common practice — provided you think in terms of complementary energy rather than random accumulation. Associating a grounding stone (onyx, garnet) with a lighter stone (amethyst, rose quartz) creates a balance between stability and openness. Conversely, multiplying stones with a strong symbolic charge in a single outfit can blur the initial intention. The simplest rule: a maximum of two stones worn together, chosen to complement rather than visually compete.
