Understanding Ring Sizes
The European System (France)
In France, ring size corresponds to the internal circumference of the ring in millimeters. A size 60 ring has an internal circumference of 60 mm, which means an internal diameter of approximately 19.1 mm.

Method 1: String or Ribbon (The Simplest)
Materials
- A piece of string, thin twine, or a strip of paper
- A pen
- A ruler
Steps
- Wrap the string around the finger to be measured
- Mark the joining point with the pen
- Unwrap and measure the length in mm with the ruler
- This number = your ring size
Example: If the string measures 60 mm → your size is 60.
Method 2: Measuring an Existing Ring
By Inside Diameter
- Place the ring flat on a piece of paper
- Measure the inside diameter in mm (from inner edge to inner edge)
- Multiply by π (3.14159) to get the circumference
- Round to the nearest even number = your size
Example: Diameter 19.1 mm × 3.14 = 60 mm → size 60.
Method 3: Online Ring Sizer
Some websites offer printable ring sizers. Be careful: the print scale must be 100% (no automatic scaling). Always check with a ruler before use.
Important Tips
When to Measure?
- At the end of the day: Fingers are slightly swollen — this is the most realistic size for daily wear
- Avoid mornings: Fingers are thinner upon waking
- Avoid cold: Cold shrinks fingers
- Avoid intense heat: Heat swells them
If in Doubt
- Choose the larger size: a ring that's too big can be adjusted, one that's too small is difficult to wear
- For wide rings (signet rings): take one size up from your usual size
- For thin rings: your exact size is suitable
By Finger
Each finger has its own size. To find out which finger to choose for your ring, consult our guide: Which Finger to Wear Your Ring On — Symbolism and Conventions.
